  • Company Overview: The company operation contains a fleet with capacity of 126.500 TEUS, all of which are used on regular service between ports on the Mediterranean, West Africa, and the Black Sea.
  • In my current role, I am working as a part of the Logistics Operations Department of Arkas Line, Istanbul.
  • Shortly after my graduation, I decided to specialize in maritime logistics and started to work in my current company right after my internships.
  • With this role beside acquiring a good command of port operations, I also had a chance to learn new professional skills such as analytical thinking, working in a fast paced environment, agility in decision making as well as working independently.
  • When I first start, my role and responsibilities included planning empty containers per region that I was responsible for, however in time, with the understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of my role, I am glad to say that my roles and responsibilities are extended in a way where I can add more value to the remit of my department.
  • For instance, I started to create reports to be able to spot issues related with idle-waiting time of containers and resolve them.
  • With the insights that I gathered from these reports, I was able to minimize idle-waiting costs per region and these efforts resulted with more stable and efficient operations on our end.
  • With this standing, I learned to work with data driven analysis to meet regional needs and expectations.
  • Now that I mention regional needs, I would like to underline that this requirement refers to a larger concept than forecasting equipment needs, it requires having up to date knowledge in terms of local regulations, good communication skills to build good relations with local stakeholders.
  • Thankfully, with plenty of hands-on experience with different regions, I can confidently say that I am able to adapt to different ways of working and build a reliable long-lasting relation with local stakeholders.
  • Apart from this, optimizing storage cost is one of my responsibilities in this role.
  • To create offers that are in the best interest of my company requires a versatile way of thinking as well as strong negotiation skills.
  • I am also responsible for training our new colleagues and I believe transferring this knowledge in a systematic way ensures that the practices for stable and cost efficient operations become the standard way of working.
  • Routine responsibilities also as follows:
  • Creating reports to minimize idle-waiting time of containers
  • Reviewing historical data to spot regional needs and plan/provide necessary equipment accordingly
  • Optimizing offers from local vendors from a cost efficiency point of view.
  • Reviewing contractual agreements
  • Assuring compliance with locale regulations
  • Reducing cost by minimizing long-standing units and keeping containers in traffic.
  • Oversaw day-to-day operations, delegating tasks appropriately to ensure smooth workflow and timely completion of projects.
  • Overall, this role provided me a truly enriching experience by enhancing both of my technical and soft skills in my field of profession and I am looking forward to my next journey.
