Digital Signal Processing – Butterworth IIR Filter  Implementation

  • Designed and implemented a 2nd-order Butterworth low-pass IIR filter from first principles.
  • Acquired real-time audio data using Arduino Nano and MAX4466 electret microphone module.
  • Derived analog filter coefficients analytically and converted to digital form using the Tustin (bilinear) transform.
  • Implemented the IIR difference equation manually in Python without using built-in DSP filtering functions.
  • Processed audio at 52 kHz sampling rate; cutoff frequency set to 3 kHz.
  • Generated and analyzed original, filtered, and 8:1 downsampled audio signals (WAV format).
  • Integrated hardware-level signal acquisition with software-based DSP analysis.
