Esma Nafiye Polat (PhD)

Generative AI Engineer / Data Scientist (Tech Lead – Agentic AI)
ÇEKMEKÖY

Summary

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering with a double major in Mathematics and a Master's degree in the same field. I recently completed my Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, specializing in Conversational AI, with a focus on Large Language Models (LLMs). With fourteen years of research and practical experience in natural language processing (NLP), data science, machine learning, and deep learning, I am deeply engaged in advancing the frontiers of technology, with a recent focus on agentic AI and tool-augmented LLM systems.

My doctoral and industrial research has focused on developing prompt engineering and fine-tuning techniques using transformer-based models and LLMs, specifically for Conversational Sentiment Analysis. I have utilized advanced methods such as LLaMA 3.1, GPT-4o, and GPT-3.5 Turbo. In the business sector, I specialized in analyzing, summarizing, and deriving insights from large-scale call transcripts to enhance the personalization and effectiveness of agent–customer interactions.

During my tenure at Afiniti Inc. (2023 – 2025), a global leader in AI solutions for optimizing customer interactions, I led the design and implementation of an AI-driven virtual bot for agent-caller interactions. The project aimed to increase revenue through optimized product recommendations and reduce operational costs via automated interaction handling. I also developed agent profiling models to generalize behavioral patterns and enhance recommendation systems.

Currently, I work as a Generative AI Engineer / Data Scientist at Architecht (Kuveyt Türk Technology), where I develop agentic AI solutions for the banking domain, including CRM meeting/activity logging and enrichment workflows and credit card statement verification agents.

Proficient in programming languages including Python, R, Matlab, and C, I am committed to applying my expertise to design trustworthy, emotionally-aware, and personalized AI systems that bridge research and real-world impact.

Agent Persona Detection as a Component of Virtual Bot Development

  • Proposing and integrating additional persona attributes such as "Problem Solver" and "Empathizer" to improve customer satisfaction, operational efficiency, and revenue in telecommunications customer service environments.
  • Generating and labeled over 6,480 synthetic conversations using GPT-4 with few-shot prompting to create balanced datasets, representing diverse agent personas and realistic conversational contexts. Synthetic data generation, model training, and evaluation were streamlined using the MLflow platform, enabling efficient tracking of experiments, data, and performance metrics.
  • Developed LSTM and Transformer-based architectures for agent persona detection, leveraging embeddings like MPNet to classify personas based on attributes such as friendliness, verbosity, interruptiveness, and tone of voice. The MLflow platform was utilized to upload data, manage models, execute pipelines, and monitor key performance metrics, ensuring scalability and reproducibility throughout the process.

Mapping Free Text to Action List for Virtual Bot

  • Developing virtual bot components for agent-caller interactions by spearheading the design and implementation of a system leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) like LLaMA 3.1 and GPT-3.5 Turbo to automatically generate structured action lists from free-text instructions, enabling efficient configuration of Intents and Skills for admin users.
  • Enhancing the adaptability and accuracy of LLaMA 3.1 and GPT-3.5 Turbo via few-shot fine-tuning, improving the model's ability to generalize from small, diverse datasets and handle complex instructions across multiple languages.
  • Employing tools like Pydantic to validate model outputs and develop evaluation metrics, including cosine similarity and action prediction count matching, to ensure alignment between generated and reference action lists, facilitating accurate tool mapping.
