I started playing basketball in primary school and it changed my life. It thought me how to lose and also how to win. I won multiple championships, went to multiple national competitions, played in the biggest youth league against the biggest clubs in Turkey like Fenerbahce and Anadolu Efes. I got 2 scholarships that changed my life completely. One was in high-school and one was in university. Being a team member, leading a team, standing out, speaking up for yourself, the things this sport added me can not fit in a paragraph. Even though i decided not to be a professional basketball player , i will always be grateful for how it shaped me as a person and the doors it opened for me. The competitive mindset, work ethic, leading, those skills are really hard to develop if you do not participate in those sports at this level and i was lucky and skilled enough to experience those and develop myself as a human.
I started my chess journey in primary school. After spending couple months as a beginner, i started joining competitions. I did not continue as a professional but it is still a part of my life. It helped me about thinking analytical and being at least 3 steps ahead. Planning for future, seeing potential problems and finding an answer for them earlier in the process is what chess added me for becoming a better version of myself.
As a child, i started doing many sports and swimming was one of them. I spend multiple years swimming and really liked it but decided to stop it for becoming a professional basketball player at that time. It helped me for learning the value of endurance. At first everything was about being fast and quick but at the end i learned the fact that it is never about how you start, it is about how you finish. Swimming helped me with learning those concepts, keeping your breath, being patient, going with a constant speed even though if you can go faster. It was not that easy to learn as a child but i understand and thank myself for learning those values early.
I also started playing guitar when i was in primary school. It was a different experience for me because as a kid growing up with sports, getting a guitar in my hands felt weird at first. Later on, i learned the basics and i was able to create by myself. This was kind of similar with the sports because after learning the basics you can add your own moves and taste to what you do. It was really important for me because i found that everything is hard and unlikable when you first start and do not know what to do. If you take the first step and learn the basics, you can deep down learn and create. This really changed my life and helped me learn how actually learn and develop a skill from scratch.
